While technical skills is still undoubtedly the most important aspect of an IT job, the importance of soft skills has been increasing throughout the years. LinkedIn’s Global Talent Trends 2019 Report ranked soft skills as one of the top trends in acquiring and retaining talent, stating that it could make or break hiring the perfect candidate. 

Also, since 2015, Google Trends shows that there has been a steady increase in the number of users searching for the term ‘soft skills’ worldwide. It is likely that this trend will continue on an upward trajectory over the next few years.

Although the type of soft skills required depends on the sector and type of job, some of the most sought after soft skills in IT includes;

1. Communication

Almost every IT job requires good communication skills, both verbal and written. This has become even more important in the last few years, with the increase in the number of companies who are working remotely. 

Communication is important for all levels of the business. For example, top management need to communicate with staff (especially when they are working remotely) to help them feel reassured and informed. IT professionals also need to have good communication skills to;

  1. Solve issues with colleagues 
  2. Explain technical processes in clear, easy to understand terms 

2. Flexibility

Employees should be open to change and flexible to adapt to any situation. For example, employees with dependents who are working from home may have to be flexible and work outside the traditional working hours.

3. Problem Solving

The ability to analyse a problem, identify a solution, and implement it is a critical skill for all IT professionals. This can be developed through the use of open dialogue with team members. Everyone should be encouraged to explain problems in their own words and work through their own solutions.

4. Organisation

In most IT jobs, it is likely that you will be working on more than one project simultaneously. Therefore, you will need to be organised and able to prioritise different tasks to meet deadlines.

Being organised will become even more important with the increase in remote/hybrid working. Employees should be planning their time wisely to ensure they are being productive.

5. Self-Motivated

Technology jobs require a commitment to learning and self-growth because the tech industry is rapidly changing. Employees should be actively trying to keep up with these changes and interested in learning new things.
