Java

In 1995, the Java language project was released to the world, being born in the minds of James Gosling, Mike Sheridan and Patrick Naughton. Development originally began in 1991 and Java was created using 5 main principles:

1. Simple, object-oriented and familiar

2. Robust and secure

3. Architecture-neutral and portable

4. High performance

5. Interpreted, threaded and dynamic

Initially, Java could run on all platforms that could support Java without the need to reconfigure the system. This meant that developers could write once, and then use it in multiple places, which contributed to the success of Java in the run-up to the dot-com boom.

Dot-com Boom

Companies that were set up in Silicon Valley during the dot-com boom are now some of the biggest tech giants in the world and the majority of their original large-scale applications were built using the Java language. Although most applications are now ran utilizing multiple languages, Java is still normally running the foundations.

According to the PYPL Popularity of Programming Language Index 2021, Java is ranked number two, with a 17.27% market share, higher than PHP and C# combined!

According to Bob Lee, Square’s Chief Technology Officer, “Java is the only choice when it comes to extreme scalability & performance requirements.”
